BMW: Aircrafts to Autos

One of the oldest and most lauded manufacturers in the world is BMW. The BMW logo is one of the best known logos in the world and has remained so for several years. While today they are known for making luxury cars, they have been involved in many different manufacturing projects. Regardless of what they have undertaken, quality has remained at the forefront of their endeavors.

BMW’s lineage can traced back to the son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, Gustav Otto. Otto founded a factory that manufactured aircraft engines and accessories. In 1918, unfortunately, his company was closed down and bought out by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke.

Rapp Motorenwerke, a contemporary of Beyische Flugzeugwerke, began specializing in the construction of aircraft engines. Although the company supplied the Kaiser’s airforce during the war, their engines were criticized for a lack of durability. In an effort to address this design flaw, they hired a young designer named Max Friz. He developed an engine that was far superior to anything that had ever been made. The amazing thing is that he did it in a matter of weeks. Friz was quickly promoted and in 1917, the Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke merged into Bayerische Motoren Werke. BMW thrived during the Second World War with its aircraft engine production.

After the war, the BMW aircraft engine plant was forced to close. They only specialized in a single product when their doors were closed. This only proved to be a temporary setback for BMW. They quickly translated their aircraft expertise into automotive excellence. Initially, BMW only built car and truck engines. They expanded to include brakes systems and soon thereafter were manufacturing entire automobiles.

The BMW logo has been projected fine craftsmanship for close to a century. Currently, they are sought after in practically every country around the world. While they may be lavishly priced, many are available as certified pre-owned BMWs. Regardless of how you get one, they are well worth the money.
