Electric Dirt Bike
Alternative energy is big today so people think about it. They think about ways to stop using gasoline which tends to pollute. An electric dirt bike can accomplish this.
Zero Motorcycles makes such a bike. The electric dirt bike they make is quiet and runs very well. They were quickly back ordered once available. Of course only 45 had been produced by that time. They want to produce thousands in 2009. They’ll also introduce an electric bike for street riding.
An electric dirt bike is great for riding in areas around the house. This could include wilderness trails in suburban developments. Regular bikes are far too loud. But the electric version hums along quietly. That’s what makes them so popular.
One negative of the electric dirt bike might be price. They’re generally more expensive than comparable gasoline powered dirt bikes. They also have limited range. This is about 40 miles per charge. That’s only a 2 hour ride. One problem with this is people like to ride for an entire day. There are no power outlets on a trail.
Many off roaders think the electric dirt bike is a fad. They don’t think it will last. Some commentators call it a decent bike as a back up, but not an only bike. Some people do like them.
It was 2002 when Zero’s founder got interested in an electric dirt bike. He was formerly an aerospace engineer, but later became a motorcycle designer. He doesn’t believe electric is boring. He custom designed every part of his bike.
The electric dirt bike battery is an issue. It’s not easy to keep them cool. Zero had to develop a quick cooling material to surround the batteries. The pack that they came up with costs nearly $4,000 to replace. It lasts for six years. The battery takes about two hours to fully recharge. That is quick. The motor has 23 hp and can go from zero to 30 in under two seconds. Many riders like that performance.
Zero’s electric dirt bike costs around $7000, with a $300 shipping fee. They’re only sold online. The company wants to become a huge concern
The electric dirt bike may be here to stay.
