Motocross is originally a French term.  The words motorcycle and cross-country combine in this word.  Many people use Yamaha dirt bikes for motocross.  These events were first named scrambling by the British.  Scrambles are the name given to each individual event.  The first ever scramble took place in 1924.  It grew in popularity throughout the 1930’s.  Originally street bikes were used, but then they evolved into the modern off road bikes we know.

The major difference between a street bike and all terrain or off-road bike is the suspension. Street bikes generally have more rigid frames.  They don’t do well off-road, and are very uncomfortable to ride there.  Dirt bikes feature better suspension to handle the tracks.  Riding on a dirt track or in the wilderness can be very bumpy.

Yamaha dirt bikes rode the surge of Japanese dirt bikes in the 1960’s.  Suzuki claimed the first world championship that a Japanese built motorcycle won in 1970.

Yamaha dirt bikes  feature prominently in the Grand Prix of Motocross and the AMA Motocross Championship.  These are professional motocross circuits.  The AMA motocross championship runs from May through September.  The Grand Prix is generally held in Europe.  But sometimes events are hosted in other places like Japan.  Through the years events have been in many other nations including Australia.

Professionals who ride Yamaha dirt bikes are in great shape.  They maintain 190 beats per minute – a heart rate – for 35 minutes  They generally do this twice per day.  It takes a lot of energy and endurance to control a heavy bike on a pounding track.

Yamaha dirt bikes are also used in a relatively new form of motocross called freestyle.  These events involve various stunts and maneuvers.  Fans love it.  One biker performed a complete back flip over the Caesar Palace’s fountain.  That was difficult.
