Get a (Second) Life?

posted in Daves Blog |
I've heard plenty about Second Life and the fun some people have leading vicarious existences in there. I'm not too sure how serious we should take it (who has time for that sort of thing?) but it's interesting to note some of the innovations going on and some businesses are clearly taking it seriously, seeing marketing opportunities in there. A number of car companies have grasped the SL nettle. If the experience in there can be cranked up to be close to real life perception (like in the movie Total Recall perhaps), then book me in for some serious fantasy fulfilment, pronto. Until then, leave me out. The idea of being a flying Avatar superhero on a screen or buying 'real estate' in there isn't quite floating my boat. Don't think I want to rush in and look over a virtual car either. Want an island of your own? Get this: "Islands are priced at US$1,675 for 65,536 square meters (about 16 acres). Monthly land fees for maintenance are US$295." (And you need to add VAT on top.) Isn't that just a little bit bonkers? Am I being a curmudgeon? Maybe. Perhaps it's just a bit of fun, like a go on PS3 - but if you take a look on the SL site, it's clearly offering an awful lot of people something more than a blast of Need for Speed. Just who the heck is in there and spending money? Quite a few people are, apparently. One born every minute. Anyone want to own up and tell me I'm missing out?
